WHAT YOU'LL NEED
TightVNC Server
Android VNC Viewer
VNC Viewer (iOS)
A computer on a wireless network. (Or
LAN, but the instructions will differ)
STEP 1:
First, download and install TightVNC server.
During installation, you will be prompted to
make a vnc password, I recommend that you
make a password for users to connect.
STEP 2:
Once the installation completes, launch the
VNC configuration. From here, you can
customize the behavior of the VNC. The port
should be set to 5900. If everything it to your
liking, you can close the configuration and
start the VNC service.
STEP 3:
Before you can do any port-forwarding, you
need to know the local IP address of your
device. This is usually a 192.168.x.xxx
number. The easiet way to find your local IP
address is to open Command Prompt
(Windows) or Terminal (Mac/Linux) and type
in ipconfig. For Mac or Linux type
in ifconfig. The value next to the IP4 address
is your local IP address. Copy that down
because you will need it later.
STEP 4:
Now to port forwarding. The instructions for
this will vary depending on your router.
Generally, what you want to do is go into
your router's settings. Go to port forwarding,
and type your local IP address. That way
traffic on this port will be forwarded to your
computer.
STEP 5:
Finally, you need to get your public IP address
so the VNC client knows where to connect to.
The easiest way to do this is to go to Google
Search and type in What's my IP
Address? This will display your public IP
address. Copy the numbers down because
you will need them later. Now you're ready to
launch the VNC app on your smartphone.
ANDROID:
On your android device, open the android vnc
viewer that you downloaded earlier. You can
type whatever you want for the nickname.
The password is the VNC password that you
created. The address is your public IP address
that you found in step 5. Set the port to 5900
(or another value if you changed it). Finally,
you can set the color format to 4bpp for the
best image quality; but for best performance
you should keep it to the lowest format
available. Then hit connect. If all goes well,
you should see your desktop.
ON IOS:
Open the VNC viewer app that you
downloaded from the app store. Add a new
connection and fill in the address with your
public IP address that you found in step 5.
The name can be anything you want.
Afterwards, it will prompt you to enter your
password for the VNC. If all goes well, you
should be connected to your desktop.
