How to Access SD Card Wirelessly via FTP Server App on Android smartphones and Tablets

For those of you who use your storage in your Android
smartphone or tablet often to copy files over often you
might want to learn how to setup an FTP server so you
don’t have to keep plugging your Android device to your
computer via a USB cable. Instead, you can setup an FTP
server, setup your Android device as a disk drive on your
computer and access your SD card wirelessly.
Even if you have your Android phone in your bedroom, you
can copy over files to it from your livingroom, how cool is
that?
It’s very simple to do actually so here’s how to do it.
Step 1. Make sure your phone’s on your home’s wireless
network. You can also set it up for access over the whole
internet but for purposes of making it simple, we will start
with just your home wireless network.
Step 2. Install SwiFTP FTP server from the Market.
Step 3. Setup username and password.
Step 4. Note the FTP URL, mine says
ftp://192.168.2.116:2121/ . You can actually put this on
your computer’s browser and access your files on your
Android devices or use your favorite FTP program.
Step 5. If you have a Windows computer, you can actually
map your Android device as a networked drive for easier
access and drag/drop files. Open up My Computer and
click on “Map network drive”.
Step 6. Click on “Connect to a Web site that you can use to
store your documents and pictures”.
Step 7. Copy over the FTP URL.
Step 8. Type the username that you setup earlier.
Step 9. Hit “Next” and your computer will ask you for the
password, enter the password you created earlier and you
should be now connected to your Android’s filesystem.
You can always access it under Computer, as you can see
I’ve named my networked Evo 4G phone as “myevo4g”.
You don’t have to have the FTP server running all the time
but whenever you need to use it turn it on and you can
copy/store files to your Android device wirelessly, no more
wires ma!
